Our Gentle Approach to OMM

At Alpine Medical Group, we take a whole person approach to your health. We listen to you to understand where you’re experiencing pain, then assess details about your lifestyle such as diet, exercise, sleeping habits, and stress. With this clear picture of your health, we can understand your overall well-being and recommend gentle, noninvasive, treatments like osteopathic manipulative medicine (OMM).

Our Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine, Dr. Dan Bothwell, identifies the root cause of your symptoms instead of merely treating the symptom itself. After gathering this information along with your current health concerns, we perform a noninvasive examination by pressing on the areas of your body relative to your symptoms.

You don’t have to live through chronic pain. Start your recovery with osteopathic manipulation treatment (OMT) by calling (907) 455-4555  today.

Who Needs Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine?

Patients of any age can benefit from osteopathic manipulative medicine. We use techniques with a gentler pressure for patients with osteoporosis and arthritis. Depending on your condition, osteopathic manipulation treatment may not be the best treatment. For example, we usually don’t recommend it for patients with long-term osteoporosis or severe joint issues. If you’ve recently suffered from a fracture or broken bone, you must wait until the bone has healed before receiving osteopathic manipulation treatment to prevent causing further stress to your injuries.

If you are dealing with any of these issues, our noninvasive osteopathic manipulation treatment can help:

  • Joint pain

  • Headaches and migraines

  • Repetitive sports injuries

  • Sciatica

  • Low back pain

  • Neck pain

Holistic Relief from Pain, Stiffness, and Limited Mobility

Each of your body’s major systems relies on the full functionality of your joints, muscles and connective tissue. We treat your symptoms by enhancing these functions through stimulation of the muscles and joints. Some of the most common techniques we use during OMT involve:

Strain/Counterstrain technique:

It uses passive body positioning of hypertonic (spasmed) muscles and dysfunctional joints toward positions of comfort or tissue ease that compress or shorten the offending muscle. The purpose of movement toward shortening is to relax aberrant reflexes that produce the muscle spasm forcing immediate reduction of muscle tone to normal levels. This allows the joint influenced by the now relaxed muscle to function optimally increasing its range of motion and easing muscle and joint pain.

Muscle Energy technique:

This technique uses the muscles own energy in the form of gentle isometric contractions to relax the muscles via reciprocal inhibition and lengthen the muscle. This is an active technique where the patient is also an active participant.

Osteopathic manipulative medicine promotes healing and improves circulation to your entire body by restoring function to bodily tissues through a minimally invasive, hands-on treatment.

What Is Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine?

Integrated Musculoskeletal Pain Management in Fairbanks, AK

When a person experiences physical or emotional trauma, it can affect all aspects of that person’s physiology. Fascia, the connective tissue casing and connecting all of the body’s internal components (nerves, tissues, bone, blood vessels), can become restricted or distorted.

When the fascia distorts or the soft tissue is affected, it can cause serious and long-term pain and discomfort. In addition to the pain, patients may experience exhaustion and immune system dysfunction.

Those who are suffering from fascial distortion or restriction require pain relief. This relief is frequently provided by healthcare providers who have specialized in treating the musculoskeletal system.

Our team at Alpine Medical Group in Fairbanks, AK is dedicated to treating musculoskeletal pain so that our patients can resume their normal lives.
